TABS Chat: Helping Our Siblings with Decisions - New Tennessee Center for Decision-Making Supports
August 19, 5:00-6:30 p.m. CT

Research tells us people with disabilities have better lives when they feel a sense of control over their own lives. What role do siblings play in making that a reality for our brothers and sisters with disabilities? Join this free, informal virtual chat hosted by Tennessee Adult Brothers and Sisters (TABS) to learn tips and tools for supporting your sibling to make more choices and decisions. Our guests for this chat will include:

  • Penny Johnson with the BRAND NEW Tennessee Center for Decision-Making Support – a statewide resource that helps people with disabilities and their families learn about all kinds of options, including supported decision-making, conservatorship, power of attorney, financial tools, and much more; and
  • Camron Hurt with Disability Rights Tennessee – our state’s legal protection and advocacy agency for people with disabilities.

Whether your sibling is in a conservatorship, your family uses other legal tools, or you haven’t started looking into options yet, this chat is for you! You’ll have a chance to ask questions and brainstorm ideas with our experts.

Tennessee’s Center for Decision-Making Support is a collaborative effort by The Arc Tennessee, Tennessee’s Council on Developmental Disabilities and Disability Rights Tennessee. The Center’s goal is to provide easy to understand, accurate information about all decision-making support options for people with disabilities, in one place. Visit the Center at https://www.tndecisionmaking.org/.
TABS is supported by the Tennessee Council on Developmental Disabilities and the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities. Note: Siblings and sibling supporters (parents, self-advocates, professionals) are welcome to join, including those outside of TN. However, the discussion will be focused on the sibling perspective and options in Tennessee.
