Overview of Interests
Dr. Adams has 25 years of experience as a therapist and advanced practice psychiatric nurse, and she completed her Ph.D. to study prevention intervention strategies for individuals with substance use disorders. Her specific interests are to identify effective prevention and early intervention strategies for women with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders and to facilitate their success in parenting their children. These children frequently have identified emotional problems, learning disabilities, development disorders, and are at high risk for substance abuse, risky sexual behavior, victimization, and violence. Outcome research on treatment strategies that break the cycle of abuse and victimization for these women and their children has been identified as a high priority by SAMSHA and NIDA.
