What does it mean to belong and why is it important?

  • The easiest way to define belonging is “a feeling that members matter to one another and the group.” This does not fully capture what it means to be truly welcoming and for all to meaningfully participate at your organization. True belonging and participation incorporates modifications that allow all individuals to be a part of the organization (at all levels) and make meaningful contributions to a space and/or program therefore being a more powerful organization for the community. The culture at an organization should reflect this as well by allowing each individual to feel valued and comfortable bringing their strengths and challenges to the organization.
  • This is the highest level of belonging or engagement all organizations should strive for.
  • Incorporating and creating opportunities for all members of a group is an ever-evolving process.
  • There is always room for improvement and growth in the journey to making your organization welcoming for all.
