Explicit Instruction: Effective Strategies and Routines

Are you looking for strategies and knowledge to better provide academic instruction to your students with ASD and other disabilities? Vanderbilt’s Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders (TRIAD) will provide a three-day hands-on workshop designed specifically for LEA faculty and staff in Tennessee who directly serve students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Participant Requirements
  1. Teach reading, writing and/or math to students in kindergarten through eighth grade
  2. Support students who receive the majority or all of their services in the inclusive or pull-out setting
  3. Educate students who will take the TNReady and perform within 3 grade levels of their current school grade
  4. Record and bring a 10-15 min of video of yourself teaching to bring to the workshop for self-reflection.
  5. Attend all three days of the workshop
  6. Participate in a three-hour site visit at your school 4-6 weeks after the training*
  7. Participate in monthly one-hour remote coaching calls for the remainder of the school year*
Training Topics
  • Best practices for academic instruction
  • Routines and supports for teaching core academic areas
  • The gradual release model
  • Appropriate learning objectives and corresponding instructional activities
Workshop Format
  • Large group instruction, modeling, and discussion
  • Small group application and role play activities
  • Planning and coaching with TRIAD Educational Consultants
  • Individualized goals and action plans
Proof of Attendance Participants will receive certificates documenting their participation in EIW and 21 hours of professional development.**
Follow Up
  • Participate in a three-hour site visit at your school 4-6 weeks after the training*
  • Monthly remote consultations via teleconferencing, phone or e-mail up to 1 hour per month for the duration of the school year.

*Participants must attend all three days to be eligible for the site visit and remote coaching, and must participate in a site visit in order to receive a certificate of completion.
**Participants must attend all three days and complete the site visit in order to receive 21 professional development hours.
