FRIST Art Museum Autism Affinity Day
BY looking at, talking about, and making art we hope to provide our visitors with multiple pathways to art. All interpretive materials, education programs, and activities are developed to engage the visitor with art, inspire creativity, and increase understanding of the visual arts. Programs and activities are offered to visitors of all ages, from those 18 years of age and younger to young adults to life-long learners. From adult workshops, summer art camps, lectures, gallery talks, films - whatever your age, we hope you find something new and exciting here at the Frist Center or out in the community through our many community partners!
Description of Autism Affinity Day
Ever wanted to visit the FRIST Art Museum? The event is co-sponsored by Vanderbilt University’s TRIAD (Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders).
Many exhibits are featured on Affinity Day including Nick Cave: Feat. and Rome: City and Empire
Chicago-based artist Nick Cave (b. 1959) produces work in a wide range of mediums, including sculpture, installation, video, and performance. His creations, bursting with color and texture, are optical delights that can be enjoyed by audiences of all ages and backgrounds. A deeper look reveals that they speak to issues surrounding identity and social justice, specifically race, gun violence, and civic responsibility. His trademark human-shaped sculptures—called soundsuits because of the noise made when they move—began as a response to the beating of Rodney King by policemen in Los Angeles more than twenty-five years ago.
One of the most extraordinary geopolitical powers in history, the Roman Empire continues to capture the imaginations of people across the globe, nearly three thousand years after the city of Rome arose from a cluster of villages in central Italy. Rome: City and Empire includes more than two hundred works from the British Museum that bring this ancient civilization vividly to life. The exhibition provides insights, through art, into the experiences of the Romans themselves, while cultivating an understanding of the dynamic relationships between the imperial government and the people it conquered. The range of objects, from across present-day western Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, show the diversity and interconnectedness of the vast empire.
