We tracked mental health of 1,000 people for four decades, and learned to our surprise that nobody kept the same mental disorder. The predominant pattern over decades is that people go through a succession of different mental disorder diagnoses. This same pattern emerged in national health records. Eventually, virtually everyone will have an experience of mental disorder, and those whose first disorder experience occurs during adolescence are likely to go on to have many different kinds of disorder during their lives. This pattern challenges over-reliance on a cross-sectional snapshot of one specific mental disorder in mental health research and clinical practice.
