Frequent VKC art exhibit collaborator and Nashville artist Lain York will have his art featured in the exhibit Lain York Selections from the National Gallery in the Gordon Contemporary Artists Project Gallery at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts from Jan. 31-May 11. The Frist is located at 919 Broadway, Nashville.
According to the Frist Center for the Visual Arts website, Lain York: Selections from the National Gallery is a tribute to John Adams, a Founding Father and the second president of the United States. Inspired by such books as David McCullough’s biography of John Adams and Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, York has created a series of colorful silhouettes that capture the vitriolic politics of the past, which the artist feels may be seen as precedents for the divisive politics of 21st century America. Despite the significance of the depicted scenes, York uses stick-on vinyl—often wrinkled or hanging loose—as his primary medium. This subverts the sense of dignity that often marks traditional history paintings.
