Next Steps Summer Institute kicks off July 13

By: Elizabeth Turner

Next Steps Summer Institute, a two-week postsecondary education camp, will welcome 14 young students on Vanderbilt's campus July 13-18. NSSI is hosted by Next Steps at Vanderbilt and the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center.

Next Steps Summer Institute is a yearly summer program offered to rising juniors, seniors, and young adults up to age 24 with intellectual and developmental disabilities. While at NSSI, campers learn more about postsecondary education options and opportunities available to them, learn independent living skills, and enjoy fun activities such as an "Iron Chef" cooking competition, bowling, pizza parties, and games.

This year's campers are coming from Illinois, Colorado, and Alabama in addition to Tennessee. For four of those campers, camp will serve as orientation before they start taking classes as Next Steps at Vanderbilt students this fall.
