The Vanderbilt Kennedy Center’s Treatment & Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders (TRIAD) has developed a special online resource for April’s Autism Awareness Month.
The website (http://kc.vanderbilt.edu/autismawareness) shares the purpose of Autism Awareness Month and World Autism Awareness Day. The website provides autism resources and lists local workshops and family-centered events that will be held in April to raise awareness of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD affects about 1 in 88 children, according to estimates from CDC’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network.
World Autism Awareness Day is Wednesday, Apr. 2. Each year, autism organizations and autism supporters around the world celebrate the day with autism-related events. Autism Speaks leads the “Light It Up Blue” campaign to “show your blue” on Apr. 2. Participation ranges in scope from wearing something blue on Apr. 2 to businesses and corporations lighting the sides of their buildings in blue to raise awareness for the developmental disability. The Metro Nashville Courthouse will have blue lights blazing on Apr. 2.
VKC TRIAD has partnered with Nashville community organizations to educate staff about autism and to help them develop ways to open new learning opportunities and experiences for families of children with ASD.
On Saturday, Mar. 29, from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., TRIAD’s monthly Families First Workshop will focus on “Promoting Inclusion in Community Arts & Education: Zoos, Gardens, Museums, Etc.” This program is free and open to the public. Click here for more information or to register to attend.
