Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (VKC) faculty, staff, and trainees participated in the 2016 Conference and Annual Meeting of the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) held December 4-7 in Washington, D.C. The theme for this year’s conference was Navigating Change and Building Our Future Together.

Changing the Conversation: Engaging Local Communities in New Ways to Identify Assets and Improve Outcomes for Individuals with IDD

"Community conversations" are an asset-based approach for increasing the capacity and commitment of professionals, families, and community allies to support access to inclusive school, work, and community experiences. This session addressed how the approach is used to engage local communities in new conversations involving a broader range of stakeholders. Presenters shared lessons learned and research from four states using this approach to inform systems change and improve outcomes.

Preparing for the Future: UCEDDs Assisting States with Transition and Compliance to CMS's Rule on Home and Community Based Waivers

In January 2014, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services published new rules on Home and Community Based Services. As States prepare for transition to compliance, several UCEDDs have been engaged in the development of person-centered, community-based plans and assisted States with transition. This presentation highlighted how AUCD and UCEDDs were involved in the assessment and transition activities as States prepare for transition to rule compliance.

The Role of Developmental Disabilities Network Partners to Support Employment Systems Change in the Partnerships in Employment Project

The Institute for Community Inclusion-University of Massachusetts, Boston and Developmental Disabilities (DD) Networks in California and Tennessee discussed outcomes of the Partnerships in Employment Systems Change projects. The session focused on three elements from the Higher Performing States model: values, leadership, and interagency collaboration; and highlighted the role of the DD Networks in California and Tennessee to create backbone consortia to scale up these elements.

How exactly do people with disabilities and their supporters generate social capital through these organizations? What factors influence whether or not these institutions successfully support someone with IDD toward independence?
