The Vanderbilt Kennedy Center Reading Clinic will be able to serve more struggling young readers during its 2015-2016 year thanks in part to a monetary gift from Advance Financial. This gift will go toward scholarships for children who might not otherwise be able to afford assessments and one-to-one tutoring from the Reading Clinic.

“We are so grateful that businesses like Advance Financial recognize the importance of reading and support the efforts of the Reading Clinic,” said Elisabeth Dykens, Ph.D., VKC director. “Every child deserves the chance to become an avid reader, and with Advance Financial’s help, we will be able to serve more children in our community by recognizing their challenges, cultivating their strengths, and showing them that reading can be a positive, transformative experience.”

"Advance Financial is focused on supporting educational initiatives. Reading is fundamental to achieving academic success. We realize that everyone does not learn the same,” said Shantrelle Johnson, vice president of Community Outreach for Advance Financial. “Therefore, we are proud to support the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center Reading Clinic so that students with reading difficulties or delayed readers can receive intensive, individualized, one-to-one tutoring that is offered by the program."

The VKC Reading Clinic provides reading instruction for children in grades K-8 who are experiencing reading problems. Many children who attend the Reading Clinic have a developmental disability, such as autism or Down syndrome. These children are often turned away from other local reading clinics who do not know how to teach reading to children with developmental disabilities. VKC Reading Clinic tutors are trained in a diversity of reading instructional methods that are shown to support children in acquiring reading skills.
