VKC Welcomes AOD Commissioner Aaron Bishop

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (VKC) faculty, staff, trainees, and students were pleased to welcome Administration on Disabilities Commissioner Aaron Bishop and Administration on Community Living staff for a three-day visit, which included a packed agenda and a keynote address for the TennesseeWorks Think Employment Summit.

Bishop, along with Jamie Kendall, Acting Independent Living Administration Director; Jennifer Johnson, Administration on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Deputy Director; and Ophelia McLain, Administration on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Office of Innovation, began their visit with members of the Tennessee Developmental Disabilities Network. Meetings continued with staff from the Tennessee Centers for Independent Living, and the Statewide Independent Living Council of Tennessee. The group also spent time with VKC leadership and were interviewed by Next Steps at Vanderbilt students about civil rights, employment, and education.

The visit culminated with Bishop’s address at the Think Employment Summit, where he gave youth attendees an opportunity to share their career dreams and emphasized the great strides Tennessee has made in partnerships to increase employment for people with disabilities. Bishop also led a session to unpack the nuances of The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act.
