Early identification of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is key to improved outcomes in language, social, and cognitive skills. And though it is now possible to identify ASD in children as young as 18 months, African American children with ASD experience significant delays in diagnosis and access to treatment services. In this talk, Dr. Fitzgerald will discuss research on the timing of autism diagnosis among African American children through his work in the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network and Study to Explore Early Development (SEED) Phase 3.
Dr. Rob Fitzgerald holds a MPH and Ph.D. in Epidemiology from Saint Louis University. His research focuses on the the epidemiology of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Dr. Fitzgerald currently serves as the Co-PI and epidemiologist for the Missouri sites for two National Center for Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) - funded projects: The Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network and Study to Explore Early Development (SEED) Phase 3.
