VKC Research Ethics Grand Rounds Panel Discussion: Standards of Care, Disability, and a Public Health Emergency: Conversations on Equitable Care during COVID-19
Wednesday, May 19, 12:00-1:00 p.m. CT

It’s been more than a year since the coronavirus pandemic first impacted the way Americans conduct business, educate their students, and live their daily lives. But nowhere was COVID’s effect in those early months more palpable than in the health care setting. Hospital beds at full capacity, depletion of personal protective equipment (PPE), and limited availability of tools such as ventilators led some medical professionals to consider difficult, potentially life-altering decisions as to who might receive medical intervention versus those who might not. But where do people with disabilities fall on this spectrum of care, or lack thereof? How are decisions made about who receives what kind of medical care?

Join us at 12 noon on Wednesday, May 19, as a panel of esteemed legal and medical professionals discuss the ethical implications behind the rationing of care during times of crisis, and what might be done to ensure that equitable healthcare is available to everyone.

Panelists:

  • Kara Ayers, Ph.D., Assistant Professor and Associate Director, University of Cincinnati Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD); Director, Center of Dignity in Healthcare for Individuals with Disabilities (of which the Vanderbilt Kennedy UCEDD is part)
  • Jack Derryberry, J.D., Legal Director, Disability Rights Tennessee
  • Jessica Turnbull, M.D., M.A., Assistant Professor, Vanderbilt Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society; Attending Physician, Pediatric Intensive Care, Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt
