Special note on proposed elimination of UCEDDs
The President’s budget is a suggestion to Congress for how they spend money in agencies and programs. The President’s budget eliminates University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDDs). With at least one in every state, Tennessee has two UCEDDs. One at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (Nashville) and one at the UT Health Science Center (Memphis). UCEDDs have played key roles in every major disability initiative over the past four decades. They are the knowledge engine of the Developmental Disabilities network across the country alongside Councils on Developmental Disabilities and Protection and Advocacy agencies. Last year, UCEDDs trained more than 620,000 people and provided specialized services to millions of people helping them live well with their disability. UCEDDs have had support from both Republicans and Democrats in Congress. And Congress must still vote to pass the budget, so education is key at this point.
